Building a blissful zero-waste paradise

Eco-design means ethical products that give back

Reciprocity is at the center of everything that we do here at EcoDreamr. We believe that giving back to the planet, as well as our communities, should be just as natural as breathing. To build a sustainable future, we must create symbiotic systems that support and empower each other. This looks like educating our community about the global impacts of plastic pollution while spreading knowledge about eco-design, ethical products, and biodegradable alternatives such as bamboo.

Bamboo is the world’s fastest-growing plant, shooting out of the ground at an astonishing 4 centimeters per second. At this rate, certain bamboo species can grow 91 centimeters (approximately 35 inches) in a single day! Unfortunately, our local landscapes are not favorable for growing bamboo. Instead, we support local Southeast Asian artisans with the ancestral knowledge of cultivating this miraculous raw material. This mutually beneficial relationship contributes to their local economy while helping us reduce single-use plastics in Europe.

Since Vietnam is one of the global leaders in bamboo and rattan products, most of our ethical products take a long journey across the world; we acknowledge that this results in a carbon footprint of its own. To mitigate the environmental impact of transportation, we support local initiatives in both the country of origin and at home in Switzerland. This branch of eco-design means supporting local farmers, regenerative farming practices, ethical production, and equitable pay standards for men and women.

Here are some of the ways that we give back today for a dreamier tomorrow.

Our local impact in Switzerland

As one of the world’s top consumers of plastic, Switzerland sees 1 million tonnes of plastic consumed annually, amounting to 127 kilograms per person (the highest per capita consumption of plastics in Europe). Approximately 55 tonnes of plastic are estimated to end up in Lake Geneva each year. These alarming facts inspire us to collaborate with local establishments, such as hotels, restaurants, and other small businesses, to shift our relationship with plastic and the role it plays in our modes of consumption.

Aside from working closely with hotels, restaurants, and retail partners to shift to a more conscious lifestyle with ethical products, we also contribute to these local organizations that are dedicated to eradicating plastic pollution and urging governments to take a stronger stance.

ZeroWaste Switzerland is a non-profit organization that works alongside businesses to reduce waste and promote a more sustainable economy. They do so by encouraging private and public institutions to replace their environmentally harmful practices with more ethical products and zero-waste solutions. As members of Zero Waste Switzerland, we firmly believe in closed-circuit production. This means that any waste produced during the manufacturing process is recycled, repurposed, or composted.
